The following screen shots were taken from a short diagnostic session with AutoTech. As you can see, the vehicle in this example is a '99 Ford Taurus and the supposed problem it's having is "Engine backfires through tailpipe while driving".

By the way, a Ford Taurus is just one of over 600 vehicles covered by AutoTech and the problem we chose is just one of many problems available to diagnose.

OK, let's begin...

We would start by highlighting the problem "Engine backfires through tailpipe while driving". Then we would click on the "Begin" button...

Many auto repair overcharges can be avoided with the AutoTech CD-ROM.

AutoTech would respond by displaying the following comment...

Then, AutoTech would display the following question...

Let's say the answer to the above question is "Yes" (thus the "Yes" button is clicked). AutoTech would then display the following comment...

Next, AutoTech would display the following diagnosis...

Clicking on the above "Explain" button would display the following (note that you can't scroll the text since this is just a screen shot of the actual window)...

And, clicking on the "Remedy" button would display the following (note that you can't scroll the text since this is just a screen shot of the actual window)...

That would end this diagnostic session.

NOTE: In case you were wondering, the book icon that appears in some of these screens is linked to a glossary. This can be used to look up unfamiliar terms.

NOTE: For the question above, we answered "Yes". However, if we had answered "No" or "Don't Know", the session would have taken a different path (leading to a different diagnosis). Incidentally, many diagnostic sessions within AutoTech are much more involved than this example (i.e. they involve more than one question and may even ask you to do some sort of simple test). If you're interested, you may view a somewhat more involved diagnostic session.
